NATO HQ, Brussels, 11 February 2022: Here are the facts: There were no NATO ground troops in Eastern Europe before 2014, when Russia illegally annexed Crimea. The battlegroups NATO has deployed in response are purely defensive in nature.

In response to Russia’s use of military force against Ukraine, NATO deployed four multinational battlegroups to the Baltic States and Poland [in 2017].
