Nalgene OTF Drink Bottle

Nalgene, for very many years a respected name in drinks containers, have introduced an OTF Drink Bottle, writes Mike Gormley.

First of all, OTF stands for On The Fly; I knew you would ask.

Nalgene drinks containers are easy to use and durable. Jean took one on our Everest Base Camp trip back in 2007 and my expedition leader son, Bruce, had one years before that on his world travels. These older models had the more classic Nalgene screw caps and are still going strong.

I like the OTF as it’s very easy to use. It has a screw cap, but this incorporates an easy to use flip cap. This allows for full flow drinking so it is very easy to get a good drink in a short time with no sucking. Very definitely a good thing if puffing up a long climb!

The flip top has a push button and can be double secured by a flip-up metal clip, so little chance of leakage. The flip cap is formed into a loop so also works as a handle and, if needs be, it can be secured to rucksack and so on. It is also the correct size for a standard car and bike holder.

The plastic used does not ‘taste’ and seems to be very easy to keep clean.

Jean taking a much-needed slug of water from the OTF on the way up Helvellyn recently – it was to be very different conditions on the top. A point here, as it was freezing on the summit, the open design of this bottle is very unlikely to freeze up so good for both hot and cold climates [©MG]
