Zamberlan 125 Intrepid RR Approach Shoes

If you are looking for a light (just 385 grammes) but very capable Approach Shoe this model from Zamberlan is definitely worth a look, writes Mike Gormley.

Designed specifically for just this sort of use in Italy, where there is a long tradition of making hill-walking, they are well suited to mounting walking with a bit of rock hopping. They do, of course, also work really well for lower level walking and just general day to day use.

To cope with the more adventurous use the Vibram Predator soles offer good grip on the rocks as well as the footpaths. Not too aggressive but effective. At the extremity of the heel are some useful ‘braking’ grips, often left off but so important when descending and help to prevent those tricky and potentially painful tail-slides! Also to deal with the rigours of mountain use, the Zamberlan 125 Intrepids have good toe and heel protective rubber reinforcements to help longevity for the more aggressive user.

The lacing system is right down to the toe so there is plenty of adjustment and can allow for the shoe to be pulled in tight for added foot/shoe security when on tricky going. I must say that you need to be cautious on sizing as these are a snug-fitting shoe and although mine are the ‘correct’ size I could really do with that extra half size for more long day comfort. Uppers are of suede which is treated with Hydrobloc to keep the water on the outside. Nice job these.
