Anduril to Develop New HIMARS Solid Rocket Motor

The US Army has selected Anduril to develop a new 4.75-inch SRM to support its HIMARS long range precision rocket artillery missions.

We entered the solid rocket motor (SRM) market in 2022 to address a clear need for greater competition and expanded supply capacity for the United States and its allies. Ongoing global conflicts have only underscored the urgency of increasing industry capacity. SRMs are essential components of munitions and hypersonic weapons, making it critical to scale production and replenish this depleted resource.

Today, I [Dr. Neil Thurgood] am pleased to share the US Army has selected Anduril Rocket Motor Systems to develop and qualify a new 4.75-inch SRM to support the Army’s long range precision rocket artillery missions. The US military needs affordable, high-volume precision fires that can be delivered at scale. We need affordable mass. Anduril’s solution will increase magazine capacity while maintaining the range, effectiveness, and lethality required on today’s battlefield.

One of the biggest challenges in modern fires is ensuring more rounds per launcher without increasing the system’s footprint. The 4.75-inch form factor potentially allows for up to 30 guided rockets to be configured in a single HIMARS pod, drastically improving loadout within existing launcher constraints. Anduril is one of the first companies developing rocket motors in this form factor to meet the Army’s need for increased volume and affordability. As part of this program, we will fabricate and test rocket motors using both traditional aluminised propellant and our advanced ALITEC fuel. ALITEC enhances rocket motor performance by improving munition range while reducing size, weight, and power demands. We anticipate that ALITEC-powered SRMs will achieve ranges comparable to significantly larger rocket motors, providing long-range strike capability in a smaller and more efficient design.

With our recent $14.3M Defense Production Act award, we are applying single-piece-flow manufacturing, powered by a bladeless high-speed mixer, to efficiently and affordably produce and qualify these propulsion systems. This US government investment is compounded by our$75 million investment to produce large volumes of SRMs at reduced costs. This ensures more rockets can be delivered to warfighters on time and at a lower cost.
