Maverick Meal Packages, a brand name of Polish company KPS Food Dystrybucja sp. z o.o., are aimed at both civilian and uniformed sectors, writes Bob Morrison.

I have been aware of these Polish meal pouches and ration packs for some time and have tasted small samples at past defence & security expos, but it is only relatively recently that I have been able to heat, photograph and eat a couple of their main courses for our Rations section. According to company representatives, quantities of Maverick Meal food packs have been supplied to neighbouring Ukraine for emergency distribution.
The company’s two main ready-to-eat product ranges are the MICRO FOOD PACKAGE box and the ALL SITUATION FOOD PACKAGE pouch: the former contains a single retort pouch with a flameless ration heater plus a disposable spoon and napkin; and the latter comprises a ration pack style complete (i.e. MRE-style) meal with main course retort pouch and secondary foodstuffs plus accessories including a heater. In addition to being provided for humanitarian assistance purposes and supplied for feeding uniformed services, both types of package are also commercially available for hikers and adventurers etc.
While I did not have sufficient weight allowance or spare space in my airline carry-on luggage to bring back complete packs, I was able to squeeze in two typical 300g main meal retort pouches and I have now sampled these after reheating in boiling water on the stove for the specified eight minutes (they can also be microwaved in a suitable container). Both meals I tried ~ KIEŁBASA W SOSIE BARBECUE or Sausage with Barbecue Sauce and FILET Z INDYKA W SOSIE MUSZTARDOWYM or Turkey Fillet in Mustard Sauce ~ were produced for Polish tastebuds but I enjoyed them, though in an ideal world I would probably have preferred to have consumed them with potatoes and rice respectively. Other main meal pouches include a Mexican Chicken Stew, Chicken in a Cheese Sauce and Beef in a Cream and Mushroom Sauce.

Although MAVERICK MEAL packs are issued to some emergency services, I have not yet seen them displayed in Polish Army ration pack displays at annual MSPO expos.
