MSR Titan Long Spoon

MSR (Mountain Safety Research) have addressed my ‘racing spoon’ requirement with their titanium Titan Long Spoon, writes Mike Gormley.

Your spoon is a real necessity and in reality, probably the only utensil you need to eat, prepare, cook and stir your pouch meal.

For troops and travellers weight is also usually quite important, where even the small things count, but when it comes to your spoon you need one that both does the job as it should and is also strong enough to last the trip – or in realty, the trips. The Titan Long Spoon weighs in at a mere 19 grammes.

Spoon shape is also important as it needs to be ‘mouth friendly’ and hold the food without spilling or making things awkward. Importantly, as so many of us now use rehydrated and/or retort pouch meals, the spoon has to be long enough to make eating easy and not a messy operation; having enough reach to get to those last important morsels in the corners of the meal pouch with minimum being left on the shaft of the spoon. This all sounds like small details but when out in the field, and if cold and wet, every little thing helps to make it a better experience.

Its all in the name here with MSR – Mountain Safety Research – and its clear with this that the designers have done their research with this tough, light, titanium spoon.

Not exactly ‘fine dining’ but, hey, a comfy rock, a good pouch meal and a decent spoon out in the evening sun ~ what more could a man need? [©JG]
