The TITAN CUP from MSR (Mountain Safety Research) is an ultralight 450ml capacity titanium mug or cookpot with folding handle, writes Mike Gormley.

A decent mug is an essential item of kit and many of us tend to have our own favourite. Your mug gets a bit personal, with some having examples that have been through thick and thin and show the knocks yet doubtless still do the job.
One of the problems of working and living outdoors, and often in a rough and tumble sort of existence, is your mug has to be able to put up with it all and not get destroyed the first time it is dropped, stood upon or simply being in an unprotected pouch when you drop your pack on the ground! Titanium is known for its toughness and also known for its lack of weight, so put together it is a perfect material for a mug… and here MSR have done just this.

We all know a metal mug is not the best vessel to have a ‘Hot Wet’ or ‘Hot Brew’ from, so MSR have sorted this on the TITAN CUP by fitting a protective rim around it. Known appropriately as the ‘Lip Saver’ this is made of silicone and is easily removable so it can be given a good clean; in contrast to the ‘black nasty’ sticky tape some squaddies use in the field on the rim of their metal canteen cup. Also coated in silicone are the double folding handles, which stow to make transportation when empty a little easier.

This mug has a 450ml capacity and weighs in at a mere 68 grammes. You can also use it on a stove as a cooking pot pot to cut out the middleman… but do remove the Lip Saver first. There is a measuring scale on the inside of this mug which has just about enough capacity to rehydrate a freeze-dried or dehydrated meal. Job done.
Serious expeditionists and travellers can go ultralight by combining this mug/cookpot with an MSR PocketRocket stove for their hot drink and meal pouch needs.
