Not just another stowage container, I reckon this robust and practical 45-litre capacity Alpaca Gear Box from Gregory is a bit special, writes Mike Gormley.

We all need to stow our stuff and if at all possible this needs to be in a reasonably ordered way so it remains protected and safe but you can access it is as and when required. This may simply be at home in a shed or attic or spare room, or perhaps when you are out on an adventure or at work… whatever that may be.

The aptly named Alpaca will ensure your kit is stowed safe and dry, and dust free. The box carries an IP65 waterproof / dustproof rating so is well able to withstand many of the rigours of a more interesting life. The use of materials such as polycarbonate tells its own story and I find it good to know some of these materials are recycled.

The general design and shape is such as to enhance the structural robustness. I wish I had this one when I was more seriously into boating, as it would have been perfect. But for now it has found a place in my Land Rover to safely stow my winter kit, which I like to keep in it for these winter months when the weather is likely to be bad and days are short. It is all too easy to get caught out if the weather takes a turn for the worse, so some basic ‘survival’ items can help one to ‘weather the storm’ in more comfort and perhaps help others who have not had the forethought to be a bit prepared.

Not only does the Alpaca contain the kit in a safe and protected way so other gear can be packed around and on top of it, but it will also allow it to be lifted out whatever the weather and still keep gear protected. With both ‘flip flop’ dual sided opening as well as lift-off lid one has better options here. I will also be using the Alpaca when I go out on Dartmoor in support of our Moorland Training Group, using it to keep my kit in which will be great as when I get several rucksacks to pile in the back it should keep my personal kit separate and secure so I can stack others’ kit on top without crushing my own stuff.

Generally these days do not use a full roof rack, but the Alpaca would be perfect for this type of use. Waterproof and dustproof are essential and this box has designed in features such as water drains and moulded-in securing slots to pass straps / cords through. The handles are well-shaped and robust for general handling and lifting.

This is far from ‘just a plastic box’ but a well thought out and designed 45-litre stowage container which should serve well for many years. Two colour options, Mirage Tan as here or Slate Blue, are available and a lifetime warranty is offered, which says a great deal for the robustness of a product.
