The Mid-Height Black Eagle Safety Pro boots with toe protection I now have on test are something a little bit out of the ordinary for me, writes Bob Morrison.

Recently, during a factory visit my hosts insisted that I wore footwear with S3 level safety protection before entering the manufacturing area and as I was wearing my usual patrol boots I had to swap these at Reception for a pair of loan shoes with toe protection. On hygiene grounds (both mine and the next user’s) I didn’t really like wearing borrowed shoes but as I had travelled half the length of the country for the visit and I wanted the story there wasn’t much choice.
Coincidentally, shortly afterwards I spotted a Tweet from HAIX announcing the availability in the UK of the new Black Eagle Safety Pro boots with metal-free composite toe caps and decided I really should have a pair on my boot shelves ready for my next factory visit early in the new year. Being silver and black in colour this particular model is not a tactical boot (though both textile and leather tactical all-black S3 versions are available) but it shares pretty much the same construction as the Patrol versions of the well-proven HAIX Black Eagle range, so it should be both comfortable and functional. The real bonus, however, is that even though it has certified toe protection it can be worn when passing through personnel scanners at high security establishments; something I do a fair bit in this job at airports, defence expos and military facilities etc.
In brief, these are lightweight cut-resistant textile uppers boots with composite anti-slip rubber and polyurethane soles plus a three-layer Gore-Tex Extended waterproof lining ‘sock’. Much more detail to follow once I have worn them for a while. A lower height safety shoe version with the same protective toecap is also now available.
