The new Zephyr MK2 Hi combat boots from LOWA in the Coyote OP colourway are now available for private purchase in the UK, writes Bob Morrison.

It is often the way with combat and patrol boot models that, logically and understandably, the manufacturers and distributors have to look after their government customers first before offering new models for private purchase. Just after the festive break Plymouth-based Task Force Distribution, who bring LOWA military and blue light services footwear into the UK, rang me up not only to say they now had a full size range of Zephyr Mark 2 high leg combat boots in stock but also to ask if I would like a pair for review. My reply was a question containing the words ‘bears’ at the beginning and ‘woods’ at the end!

In the past I have owned a pair of mid-height original LOWA Zephyr desert boots, as has my colleague Mike Gormley, but in both cases we opted for the GTX version with a Gore-Tex membrane laminate lining. This time, even though my feet get on very well with the Gore-Tex Professional lining in hot climates, I opted to for the non-membrane boot because as a reviewer I feel I really should try all alternatives rather than just sticking to particular specifications I have grown accustomed to over time; the same goes for choosing the high leg option, as almost every day I wear mid-height patrol or combat boots of one brand or another.

As luck would have it, when Scott from Task Force called I had just finalised travel arrangements for a work trip somewhere potentially hot & dusty next month (where hopefully it should be 15-20° warmer than here in the UK) and once I have tried these boots out in more appropriate circumstances I’ll pen a decent review. So far they have only covered ‘carpet’ miles, which is actually not too inappropriate as to date they have been almost as comfortable as a pair of slippers.

At first glance the Zephyr Mark 2 does not appear to be all that different from the original, and very popular, LOWA Zephyr boot but the lacing system has been updated to give a better and snugger fit (as well as to tuck way in a tongue pocket) plus the outsole has a different tread pattern. It will be interesting to see how well these changes perform in-theatre, so to speak.
