Helly Hansen have a wide range of shorts for men to make life comfortable for the more active when the going gets warm, writes Mike Gormley.

In the Northern Hemisphere it is getting to the time for wearing shorts… unless, perhaps, you are one of those hardy posties who seem to wear them pretty much all year round. Back while the UK was shivering I got ahead of the game and ‘went south’, taking a couple of pairs from the extensive range of Helly Hansen shorts with me. As ever with HH garments these are a good fit, very practical and comfortable to wear. Good, useable and secure pockets make them great to travel in, as well as for day-to-day use.

Before heading off to the Southern Hemisphere I also had the opportunity to wear the Men’s Dock Cargo Shorts here in the UK. These are made from robust cotton and hemp materials and aimed at those who sail, but I see no reason at all to extend the range of uses to hill walking and general day to day wear, especially for where the going gets tough. They have side hand pockets as well as substantial button-secured cargo pockets. Good all-round shorts for those who are going to give them a tough life.

For the warmer climes of my travels Down South I took the HH Crewline Cargo Shorts and the HH Quick Dry Cargo Shorts. Both models are lighter to carry and wear, and better suited to travel wear in hot climates as well as being easier to wash and dry when frequently on the move but not actually wearing them.

First the Men’s Crewline Cargo Shorts 2.0 model. Designed for sail racing, as with the others these Oxford Fabric shorts are easy-wearing, comfortable and hard wearing. For me these have really stood up to a lot of very varied use and will no doubt put up with plenty more. Possibly importantly for the type of use these are likely to get, they offer UPF 50+ protection from UV.

My third pair of HH shorts to feature here are the Men’s HH Quick-Dry Cargo Shorts 11″ which have a two-way stretch and ripstop fabric so are more compliant when active. They have convenient side hand pockets with mesh inners so are cooler and allow air to flow. Importantly, for me at least, they have good sized and securable cargo pockets; I reckon these to be essential for the traveller and for those who get out there doing things where you need the ability to carry items that need to be kept handy.

All in all Helly Hansen offer a great range of shorts in addition to the ones featured here so should be able to cover most readers’ requirements and activities.
