Expedition Foods offer a significant range of pre-prepared foods for those out and about with this Thai Curry being a dish we really liked, writes Mike Gormley.

Love ‘em or not those of us who spend any real time out and away will be very familiar with both ‘boil in the bag’ and ‘freeze-dried’ meals. I have been eating, even surviving on, this sort of food since pouches took over from the good old ‘compo’ rations when absolutely everything was in a tin; yes, even loo paper and matches!

I am pleased to say things have moved on a very long way since these days, although we all had our perhaps unusual favourites back then. Today I guess you might say we are a bit spoilt for choice. There is a significant range of foods and flavours available to us with meals taking in mains, breakfasts and some very yummy puddings. As well as this they accommodate a variety of tastes and dietary needs so can accommodate most of us.

Expedition Foods, as their name suggests, are up there providing a wide range of foods for those that travel; be it out for a day, a weekend or for months at a time. Their range is large and often changing and expanding. Recently we had the opportunity to try an in-field menu which reads more like a Saturday evening out rather than a night ‘on the hill’. The Thai Green Chicken Curry was our tasty lunch when last out on Dartmoor as we spent the day on the moor on a photo session.

As ever with freeze-dried meals, I find they are better if given a bit of additional time to reconstitute from their dehydrated state. I am sure you will all know this, but the packet should be given a good shake when still sealed to get things out of the corners and once hot water added, make sure this gets to all those difficult to reach parts so the complete meal becomes rehydrated; not a criticism, just a fact of life. The meal can of course be put into a pan, but that then takes away some of the advantages.

Expedition Foods use dual-opening packets with the first tear off to allow water to be put in before resealing to keep the heat in during reconstitution. Then in preparation to eat, tear off the second strip to enable easier access to the food and reduce the potential of messy spoon syndrome.

The meal we were given to try was a Double Serving with a dry weight of 170g generating 1000 kcal; either a more sustaining meal for one maybe or a lighter meal for two. We shared this one and both agreed that had we been eating this after a long active day out it would make a good single serving.

I have just been notified by Expedition Foods they have some new menus out so hopefully I will be sharing some of these with you in the future.
