Vango Halo Pro 300 3-Man Tent

Our first family outing with this Vango Halo 300 was on Dartmoor where a storm came in ~ the tent did very well in the wind and rain at keeping grandson Jackson and his father Dan dry over a long wet night [© Mike Gormley]

The Vango Halo 300 is a very well thought out 3-man tent suitable for year-round camping, writes Mike Gormley.

This tent from Vango has a great number of really good features and has certainly proved its worth for me and my family. For me it has been a bit of a ‘rain magnet’, though that’s not Vango’s fault, but it has had the advantage of me being able to try the Halo in the wet. In fact very wet, and sometimes windy, conditions and I can safely say it has stood up to both very well indeed.

A while back my son Angus chose this tent model for his 1771 mile / 2850km long and over three month duration canoe expedition where he paddled the entire length of the River Danube. The Halo was his home throughout, and it proved to be a very worthy choice.

During his long Danube expedition it was not always possible for Angus to get a good near level campsite, such as this sandy bank, but the structure of the Halo allowed it to be pitched successfully most places [©MG]

Closer to home, my second family have used it on Dartmoor, in particularly classic Dartmoor conditions, and I too have enjoyed using it. It is really a ‘team’ tent or, as Angus did, one to be carried on some form of transport; though it could be divided up for a team to carry. This said it is quite a compact tent and weighs in at just 3. kg so is not excessive for what you get. It is regarded as a three-man tent, and for sure there is room for three, but as a two person shelter it offers some really useful space to operate and live in.

Seen from inside there is plenty of room for an inflatable sleeping mat ~ note also the large rounded door and overall height [©MG]

One of the Halo’s main attributes is its internal height. I am quite tall and found it really good to be able to sit up and the walls do not intrude into the living space as they are as near vertical as possible in such a tent. Pitching the Halo is as easy as tent pitching gets really. It can be pitched as one, because the inner is attached to the outer. For me this is a close-to-essential factor, and especially so when the weather is against me.

The three PowerLite alloy poles are all the same, so another major advantage, but especially so in poor weather or in the dark, or both. These support the tent well and once erected the entire assembly can easily be moved. I am sure you understand how handy this can be to adjust for wind direction or when you discover the slope is not quite in your favour or there is a rock of hump in the wrong place. Note I am talking wild camping here, not a nice level camp site.

Both doors can be zipped open from top or bottom for access or just a look at the scenery [©MG]

Pegging down is easy, and the Halo 300 has good guy lines to brace the structure against the wind. Once up, you have the benefit of two doors and two useful size porches; very handy for multiple occupants. A neat feature are the two separate triangular ground sheets to fit into part of the porches to help keep stowed kit dry and off the grass / sand etc. The doors offer a good wide access and the inner doors are rounded so are easy to open and to get through. The main door zips from top or bottom so can be used to check out the views or weather and stay protected as required.

There is very good and controllable ventilation designed into the Halo. There are vents in the top of the inner and zipped vents on the door tops, as well as the inner being made of breathable polyester. For my use this all works very well. The vents are fitted with anti-bug mesh. Also on the inside are several mesh storage holders to keep those small items safe and handy. Packing up is also an easy and quick process, made even more so by the top opening and generously sized carry bag.

The tent bag is perfect, being top-opening and of generous size but with volume adjusters making it easy to pack tent, poles and pegs for a quick and easy getaway [©MG]
A repair kit is supplied with the poles and pegs ~ very handy when away from resupply [©MG]

The Vango Halo 300 semi-geodesic is a well-designed and specified practical all-year-round tent.
