More than 3,500 allied troops are getting to work in Latvia for Exercise RESOLUTE WARRIOR, a comprehensive test of NATO’s recently upgraded military presence in the Baltic state.

Multinational Brigade Latvia grew out of the multinational battle group, which was established in response to Russia’s illegal annexation of Crimea in 2014. The approximately 900-troop strong force [NATO enhanced Forward Presence, or eFP, BG Latvia] was one of four deployed in Eastern Europe to help reassure Allies. Following Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, NATO Allies decided to augment some battlegroups into full brigades, adding thousands of additional troops, as well as new capabilities like heavy artillery, air defence, combat aviation and reconnaissance troops.

In July 2024, with the addition of a Royal Danish Army battalion, the battlegroup in Latvia was formally established as a Multinational Brigade. This is the third time Denmark has sent a battalion to Latvia since 2022; these troops will return home in December. RESOLUTE WARRIOR is the first test of new formation, challenging commanders to effectively control a multitude of countries while leveraging their different capabilities.

Multinational Brigade Latvia includes troops from 13 NATO Allies: Albania, Canada, Czechia, Denmark, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Poland, Slovakia, Slovenia and Spain. UK troops took part in the exercise as simulated opposing force.
