LOWA R-8 GTX Thermo ~ CWW Boot Preview

Winter has arrived in Devon and when I saw the first snow of the season I headed straight out to photograph my LOWA R-8 GTX Thermo boots, writes Bob Morrison.

As luck would have it these LOWA R-8 GTX Thermo boots arrived after my return from my only Norway trip of this year, when I covered BRILLIANT JUMP 2022, so until I woke up this morning to see snow on the skylight above my scratcher I hadn’t really had much of an opportunity to take them out for cold climate photos and had even less chance to try them out in appropriate conditions.

This all-leather 8-inch military model from Bavarian bootmakers LOWA, though actually lasted in their Croatian factory, is very much CWW (Cold Wet Weather) footwear as it not only uses 400g Primaloft thermal insulation and Gore-Tex membrane in its uppers construction but it also has the Vibram Arctic outsole for grip on ice and packed snow. The 8-eyelet lacing system is closed with a lace lock at the fourth position, the soft leather tongue gusset extends to 7th eyelet height, and the soft leather collar is well padded. This is not only a very functional winter boot, but it is really comfortable to wear as well.

As this cold snap is predicted to be hanging around for a while it is my intention to wear these LOWA boots on a daily basis and in due course I will report back in a little more detail ~ though first I intend bringing you an update on the latest model ALTBERG Tabbing Boot Mk3, which I have been wearing intermittently since the summer in differing conditions.
