Press Release, Llangeinor, 21 September 2024: IrvinGQ, world leaders in aerial delivery systems in conjunction with the UK Armed Forces, today commemorated the 80th anniversary of the Battle of Arnhem with a powerful and emotionally charged parachute jump over Arnhem, Netherlands. This event not only paid tribute to the bravery and sacrifice of those who fought in one of World War II’s most significant battles, but also deeply moved all present, including veterans who were there to witness the poignant display.
In a breathtaking surprise, eight of the parachutists descended from the skies with specially designed red and black poppy parachutes. This unexpected and visually striking display, symbolising remembrance and the enduring legacy of the heroes of Arnhem, left onlookers—and particularly the attending veterans—deeply touched. The parachutes, meticulously manufactured by IrvinGQ, serve as a modern homage to the company’s historic connection to the battle, dating back to the original X-Type parachutes used during Operation MARKET GARDEN in 1944.
The concept for this commemorative jump was envisioned in 2019 by Russ Murphy, a former RAF Falcons Display Team member and a key figure within IrvinGQ’s sales department. His ambition was to create an event that would not only celebrate IrvinGQ’s long-standing relationship with the armed forces, but also honour the memory of those who served. Although the global pandemic delayed the project, the significance of the 80th anniversary made this the perfect moment to bring this heartfelt tribute to life with one poppy for each decade that has passed.
Dave Jackman, Design Services Supervisor at IrvinGQ, who has been intimately involved in the project from its inception to packing the poppies for the jump, reflected on the event’s emotional impact: “This day is incredibly special to us and to all who have been touched by the legacy of the Battle of Arnhem. The poppy parachutes were not just a surprise, but a deeply moving tribute, symbolising both remembrance and the unwavering quality of IrvinGQ products. Seeing the veterans’ reactions as the poppies unfurled in the sky is something I will never forget.”
The commemorative jump was kept a closely guarded secret, adding to the emotional resonance of the moment. For those present, particularly the veterans who have carried the memories of Arnhem for decades, the sight of the poppy parachutes was an unexpected and powerful reminder of the enduring respect and honour that their sacrifices command.
As the 80th anniversary of the Battle of Arnhem is commemorated, IrvinGQ is profoundly proud to have honoured the heroes of the past with a tribute that will be etched in memory for years to come.
*We would like to extend our gratitude to our suppliers, Ryknel and Heathcoat, for providing the high-quality fabric used in the poppy parachute production. Additionally, we thank Cardiff Embroidery for their exceptional work in embroidering the poppy logo.
