News Release, Brussels, 06 October 2022: More German troops and equipment have arrived in Lithuania following NATO’s decision to increase presence on the Alliance’s eastern flank.
Over 200 soldiers from Germany’s 413 Light Infantry Battalion and 50 vehicles disembarked at the port of Klaipėda on 5 October 2022. They will be joining the approximately 1,500 German troops already deployed to the NATO battlegroup in Lithuania, along with forces from Belgium, Czechia, Luxembourg, the Netherlands and Norway.
At the Madrid Summit in June 2022, NATO Leaders decided to strengthen NATO’s forward defences, including by enhancing NATO’s battlegroups in the eastern part of the Alliance up to brigade level, a force usually made up of around 3,000-5,000 soldiers.
