On 16 September Task Force RAPSTONE 4×4 Utility Vehicles surfaced on an MoD stand at Defence Vehicle Dynamics 2026 at Millbrook, reports Bob Morrison.

According to Luke Pollard MP, UK Minister of State for Defence Readiness and Industry, in a 30 January 2026 Parliamentary Written Answer to a question from Ben Obese-Jecty MP, “Task Force RAPSTONE is an Army initiative to accelerate the fielding of new capabilities into the British Army, drawing on lessons learned from Ukraine.”
Over the last few months a large quantity of slightly militarised 4×4 pickup trucks, including both Toyota Hilux and Chevrolet Silverado models, has appeared on UK military bases and quite recently keen-eyed observers may have spotted satellite imagery of several hundred of these neatly lined up on the parade grounds of a certain MoD supply depot. NATO Green and civvy colour-scheme examples running on military registrations have also been spotted on the public highways near certain facilities and even I have witnessed this purely by chance within the last couple of weeks when travelling to and from the West Midlands premises of established defence suppliers.
These new 4×4 utility vehicles, which it appears from gleaned official sources may now total in excess of 1250, or maybe one third of the initial ongoing UK LMV (Light Mobility Vehicle) project procurement, are NOT part of this recently warmed up process. It seems they are a merely a stop-gap to tide the Armed Forces over for the next four or so years. However it would be naïve to think that any pertinent lessons learned from the use, and possible operational deployment, of these supposedly temporary vehicles would not have any knock-on effect on future plans.
In a footnote to my 04 July 2026 Light Military Vehicles at Eurosatory ~ Photo Album I added the following which sheds a little more light on some of these vehicles: On 22 June 2026 the Minister for Defence Procurement and Industry, Luke Pollard, confirmed to Parliament in a Written Answer that it was the Toyota Hilux which was recently urgently procured under the £20million Project NIALA contract to equip “11 Brigade following its transition from a Security Force Assistance Brigade to a Tactical Recce Strike Brigade”, with the project providing “270 Recce Strike Vehicles and associated support.” Until the Minister brought this into the public domain, also stating “Project NIALA is separate from the Light Mobility Vehicle (LMV) sub-programme within the Land Mobility Programme”, the ‘Special Operations’ aspect stopped us mentioning the 30 March 2026 contract.
After an extended period of what could best be described as stagnant military utility vehicle procurement in the UK we now appear to be living in more interesting times.
