The Verglas Glacier Down Jacket from Helly Hansen is a garment to keep the ladies warm over the winter months, writes Mike Gormley.

It is the time of year, in much of the northern hemisphere at least, to put away those summer clothes and start looking at garments that will keep you warm as the weather gets cooler.

The Verglas Glacier down jacket, aptly named, is a smart, ladies fit jacket that is also very practical. Perfectly acceptable for a night out when it’s cold as well as for more adventurous outings where a real outdoor jacket is required.

Jean has had this one on test for a while now, so has had a chance to make good use of it in very varied conditions and situations; though sadly we’ve not made it to a glacier yet. That was much earlier this year, but we know this jacket would have been perfect for our trip to the Far South.

This is a well-featured down filled jacket. The fill is part European goose down and feather as well as water-resistant PrimaLoft synthetic insulation; a good combination in my view. It has a very cosy and fully adjustable hood when required. The baffled front zip closes the jacket up high to meet the hood. The length is good with a slightly drop back to cover the rear if bending and active, or when leaning over a wall just admiring the view.

This jacket is well equipped with a range of useful pockets, both internal and external, as can be seen in the images. Down can be a bit off-putting but this jacket has a DWR treatment and the fill is water resistant so the garment can be washed. The colour of Jean’s jacket is Crushed Grape and there are another three to choose from, including Black. Sizes range from XS to XL.
This is very nice, cosy and versatile jacket well suited to many varied uses.
