Luci Lights, from Brooklyn-based MPOWERD, are a handy solar-powered, lightweight, waterproof, super-bright camping or emergency light range, writes Mike Gormley.

I have used these over some period of time, as has my son who swears by his for use in his camper van expeditions. On the face of it Luci Lights looks a bit like novelties, but in reality they are well up for some serious use.

For a start they are totally solar powered, so no batteries required; the solar panel is built into the top. The entire light unit squashes more or less flat and can be inflated through a non-return valve. The unit has a single control button which gives you two power settings and, dependent on model, White / Flash / Red light options plus a flashing SOS capability. The inflatable body of the Luci Light acts as a diffuser but the base is clear and gives a more concentrated light so can be used as a more conventional torch as well as a reading light. There is a built-in hanging strap.

Again dependent on precise model, the Luci Light can last for up to 24 hours on a full charge, dependent on setting, producing an adequate 65 lumens which is plenty as a good base light for your tent of work area. They of course work nicely for party events as well and there are other similar units which have different colours and even a much larger 360 lumens Luci Base Light version which doubles as a phone charger. The lights will float, which can be handy, and are also waterproof.
