The 500ml Ocean Bottle Original and 350ml Ocean Bottle Brew Flask are recycled and efficient drinks containers, writes Mike Gormley.

The sale of these recycled stainless steel flasks from Ocean Bottle helps fund the removal of ocean-bound plastic bottles; no bad thing in my mind. In fact the Norwegian company goes to some considerable lengths to ‘harvest’ plastics in coastal communities to enable these to be reprocessed. Somehow, I can’t see them running out of these materials any time soon. Ocean Bottle concentrates their plastic recovery in areas where it is most needed in various parts of the world.

The stainless steel they use is also mostly repurposed but, to cut to the chase, the two items I have from their inventory have proved to be both durable and good to use. I met the company at the OTS (Outdoor Trade Show) event earlier this year and picked up one of the Ocean Bottle Original range. This has a recycled stainless-steel inner coated in recycled plastic with matching screw top and cap. It all opens up for easy cleaning and the quarter turn cap is quick and easy to remove to take a well-earned slug of the cool drink. This bottle is well able to keep the drink cold for long periods and I have tended to fill mine with cold water and leave it in my car for when needed, which works well. The cap has a carry loop for when you are on the move.

The second item I have from Ocean Bottle is their aptly named Brew Flask. Although both containers featured here will work with either hot or cold liquids, this one is specifically aimed at that welcome ‘hot wet’ or ‘hot brew’. This said, everything is interchangeable so the cap from the Ocean Bottle Original will fit the Brew Flask and vice versa. Handy as all this is, I feel I generally need a bigger brew than the 350ml flask offers but it easy to upsize to the 500ml version.

The top cap of the Brew Flask is a bit different as it has no mechanism, just a screw element in the cap. Again, a quarter turn allows the fluid to flow when tipped up. The design is such it naturally prevents spillage, so can be left in the open position in a cup holder and be quite safe. The top is a 360° design so you can simply grab and drink without worrying if you have it the right way around. It all works very well.

The various elements of these containers can be purchased as independent items so you can mix and match along the way. These are all dishwasher safe for a good clean but easy enough to clean when in the field because they come apart as needed. A whole range of colours is available and if you want to personalise yours, this can be done as well. Alternatively, if you would like to have your group, unit, or company logo put on this can also be done.

All this is designed in Norway and a good job they have done with it.
