Press Release, Baku, 30 September 2026: Makine Kimya Azerbaijan (MKA), established by MKE in 2025 to expand opportunities for regional cooperation and manage its commercial operations locally, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Azerbaijani defence company MIRAS.
Building on the agreement signed between MKE and MIRAS at SAHA 2026, the MoU covers the modernisation of BMP-1 infantry fighting vehicles in service with the Azerbaijani Army and the implementation of joint defence industry projects in Azerbaijan. The first modernised BMP-1, named ‘TURAN’, was unveiled at the MKE stand during ADEX 2026. The MoU also aims to explore new projects involving weapons, ammunition and vehicle-integrated systems, as well as maintenance and refurbishment.
Counter-Drone Capability Planned For BMP-1T (TURAN): Modernised by MKE and displayed for the first time at ADEX 2026, the BMP-1T(TURAN) enhances the existing platform’s firepower and its target detection, tracking and fire control capabilities to meet modern battlefield requirements. As part of the modernisation, the existing 73mm main gun is being replaced with a 30mm automatic cannon featuring a dual-feed ammunition system. The new turret provides a wider elevation range and continuous 360-degree rotation, offering greater flexibility against different targets.
Equipped with electro-optical and thermal imaging systems, automatic target tracking and advanced stabilisation, the BMP-1T (TURAN) delivers improved day and night operational effectiveness. Its upgraded digital control architecture strengthens crew coordination during target detection, assessment and engagement. The modernisation also aims to provide the BMP-1T (TURAN) with protection against drone threats, drawing on MKE’s experience in developing the TOLGA Short-Range Air Defence System.
