Press Release, Farnborough, 20 July 2026: Proven in air-to-air combat, now evolved for the ground: at Farnborough International Airshow, MBDA is displaying SL-ASRAAM, showcasing an agile, low-cost, and immediate solution for a Mobile Short Range Air Defence (SHORAD) system.

In an era of rapidly evolving aerial threats – from highly capable combat air platforms to the proliferation of unmanned aerial systems (UAS) – the need for flexible, responsive, and scalable ground-based air defence has never been more critical. SL-ASRAAM has the necessary interfaces to integrate seamlessly into wider battlefield networks, provide a true Integrated Air and Missile Defence capability.

Battle-Proven Pedigree: The Advanced Short Range Air-to-Air Missile (ASRAAM) is already globally recognised as one of the most effective infrared-homing missiles available on the global market. Having been battle-proven in demanding operational environments, its seeker technology and aerodynamic precision are unmatched.

By adapting this flight-proven technology for surface launch, MBDA has eliminated the developmental risk associated with new missile programs. Rather than develop a new product completely from scratch, MBDA is offering a platform built on a legacy of success, adapted for a new domain.

Capability Available Now: We have seen recent conflicts move faster than traditional procurement cycles. Defence forces cannot afford to wait a decade for the next generation of air defence.

The SL-ASRAAM is not a concept for the future—it is a capability available now. Because it leverages existing production lines and a mature technological base, SL-ASRAAM can be deployed rapidly to fill critical gaps in airspace protection, providing immediate security to high-value assets and personnel.

Mobile SHORAD Solution: Whereas static air defence increases the threat risk due to slow relocation times, mobile defence is a strategic advantage.

SL-ASRAAM is designed specifically for Mobile SHORAD (Short Range Air Defence) applications. The power of this transition is already being utilised in theatre. By integrating SL-ASRAAM into a highly mobile, vehicle-mounted system, SL-ASRAAM demonstrates exactly how a high-performance missile can be turned into a Mobile Quick Reaction Air Defence. It serves as a blueprint for the future of short-range air defence, offering a world-class ‘shield’ on a mobile platform that can be deployed and operated at speed.

High Performance, Low Cost: Effective air defence requires a layered approach, with a sustainable balance between lethality and economy. SL-ASRAAM delivers a low-cost alternative to complex, heavy air-defence systems without compromising on interception probability.

By utilising a highly efficient design and a streamlined launch mechanism, SL-ASRAAM reduces the total cost of ownership and the logistical burden on the operator. This allows the war fighter to deploy a higher volume of interceptors across a wider area, ensuring no threat goes unanswered.
