Press Release, Plymouth MN, 22 June 2026: The US Army has awarded Northrop Grumman a five-year contract to produce the M1147 Advanced Multi-Purpose (AMP) round of large calibre tank ammunition. This multiple year contract supports the requirements in meeting the demands for both the US Army and our international partners, reinforcing Northrop Grumman’s ongoing commitment to readiness and innovation in munitions.
- The M1147 AMP is a next-generation 120mm round designated for use on the US Army’s M1 Abrams Main Battle Tank.
- AMP combines the capabilities of four legacy rounds into a single munition. Utilising a multi-mode programmable fuse, AMP can operate in point-detonate, point-detonate delay, and airburst modes, enabling it to engage a variety of targets.
Dave Fine, vice president, armament systems, Northrop Grumman: “With its enhanced functionality, the M1147 AMP meets the Army’s needs for efficiency and readiness, while enhancing the lethality of the Abrams Main Battle Tank. This capability enables unmatched mission flexibility by empowering forces to adapt instantly to any threat.”
Northrop Grumman’s history in design, development and production of large calibre ammunition spans over 45 years of experience. In that time, we’ve delivered over five million large calibre tactical and training rounds to the US Army, US Marine Corps and allied militaries around the globe.
